In our church we do follow Jesus–we try to be like him, you know–judge not lest ye be judged, and love one another. But when it comes to praying we pray to God in Jesus name. In this family, I try to keep the “church” words for church. Well, my little 5 year old, Blake, has really found a devotion to Jesus. Every conversation starts with “Jesus”, and when watching TV or carrying on a conversation with someone, Blakelynn will break in with an important news flash about Jesus. Yesterday it was, “Mom, Jesus was resurrected!”, to which I answer, “Yes, Sweetie, he was!” But it was like 15 times! I told my mom she is starting to sound like an Evangelical with her use of his name.
At Easter dinner Blake was adamant that we have a prayer over the food. My husbands family is not of our faith, they are Catholic, and were fine having a blessing on the food–even though there may not have been one without Blake’s insistence. So…since she insisted, it fell to her to give it. I asked her if she needed help and she said no. Blakelynn has prayed like a Mormon for years. She’s never NOT prayed like a Mormon–until Easter dinner. “Dear Jesus” began my sweet little girl. I was so surprised that I had to open my eyes to make sure she wasn’t joking around. She was completely sincere–and it was precious. She gave the sweetest, most ‘confident’ prayer I’ve heard in a long time. I’m not one that has ever felt really comfortable saying the prayer, but to hear this 5 year old speaking very confident and comfortable…I was humbled. I did tell her how proud I was of her and how much I loved her prayer. Then I had to excuse myself to call my mom in Utah to tell her the story. It still makes me giggle!

I’m not a very religious person, but when I hear stories like this, I do have to wonder if Jesus is speaking through our children. They are so innocent and so much more likely to listen.
I would’ve been very proud of her too, through a gully washer of tears!
